Importing extra virgin olive oil to Sweden: customs, VAT and labelling

Swedish importers of EVOO from Spain enjoy free EU circulation, but retail placement still requires strict labelling, Tullverket declaration and correct VAT handling. Here is what your logistics and compliance teams should have ready before the first pallet lands in Gothenburg.

EU free circulation — no import duty inside the union

EVOO of Spanish origin ships under EU free circulation. No customs duty applies. Tullverket still requires an EORI number, commercial invoice, packing list and CMR.

Swedish VAT (moms)

Foodstuffs are taxed at 12 % moms. B2B buyers registered for VAT reclaim it against output VAT; foodservice and retail chains typically handle it via their Skatteverket filing.

Mandatory Swedish labelling

Livsmedelsverket requires ingredient list, net volume, harvest year, best-before, lot number, EU country of origin, business responsible for the food and full nutrition declaration per 100 ml — all in Swedish or a Scandinavian language customers understand.

Cold-chain and shelf-life

EVOO does not need reefer, but keep away from direct sunlight above 25 °C. Shelf-life 18–24 months from bottling. Provide temperature logs for lemon juice NFC in the same shipment.

Port of entry and last-mile

Gothenburg (Göteborg) is Sweden's largest container port and the default hub for EVOO landing DDP or CIF from Algeciras or Valencia. Stockholm Norvik handles east-coast retail chains.
