HACCP, IFS Food and BRCGS explained for food buyers

Retail category managers reject 15 % of first-time supplier applications on missing or expired food-safety certificates. This is what each certificate really covers and which one your channel needs.

HACCP — the floor, not the ceiling

Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points is a legal minimum inside the EU (Regulation 852/2004). Every food business must operate an HACCP plan — but on its own it is not a passport into retail.

IFS Food Higher Level

GFSI-benchmarked audit run by IFS. 'Higher Level' means a score above 95 % on a third-party audit covering food safety, quality, allergens, defence and fraud. Standard passport for German, Austrian and French retail.

BRCGS Global Standard

GFSI-benchmarked, developed by British Retail Consortium. Grades AA to D. Standard passport for UK, Irish and export retail.

EU Organic (Euroleaf)

Regulation 2018/848. Mandatory for anything labelled 'bio', 'eco' or 'organic' inside the EU. Requires 3-year conversion of soil and full parcel-to-bottle traceability.

Kosher, Halal, Non-GMO

Channel-specific. Kosher (OU, KLBD) required for Israeli and US kosher retail. Halal (JAKIM, HFA) required for Gulf and SEA retail. Non-GMO Project verification requested by US natural channel.
